New Jersey paycheck calculator
How your paycheck is calculated
Gross pay is what you earn before anything is taken out. Pre-tax deductions such as a traditional 401(k) and HSA payroll contributions come out first, which lowers the pay that income tax is worked out on.
Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets after the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly). Social Security takes 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 a year and Medicare 1.45% of all pay, 7.65% together; above $200,000, an extra 0.9% of Medicare tax is withheld.
Most states then take their own income tax, and some add disability or paid-leave insurance or a city wage tax. What is left is your take-home (net) pay.
